The mission of the Native American Advocacy Program, which strives to maintain a healthy organization, is to assist Native Americans with disabilities and Native American Youth by promoting a healthy lifestyle, providing prevention, education, training, advocacy, support, independent living skills, and referrals.
 

 

 

Lakol Woonspe (Learning the Lakota Way of Life) provides consultation and education including:

      NAAP provides non-native service providers with Cultural Orientation Training to increase cultural awareness and encourage cultural competency in service provision.

      NAAP also provides presentations on various disabilities and disability related issues such as: mental illness and Native Americans, ADHD, autism, disability etiquette, Native Americans and dual diagnosis (mental illness and chemical dependency), crisis counseling in Indian Country, suicide prevention and Native Americans, and the American with Disabilities Act (ADA).

      NAAP has offered workshops on each tribal nation for consumers, family members and professionals on new mental health research, treatment models and service provision issues. All trainings offer continuing education credits for various professional disciplines and college credit in collaboration with local tribal colleges and universities.

     NAAP has held one two-day workshops on four tribal nations. NAAP has hosted nine Native American Disability Summit for consumers, family members, and state and tribal services providers. Nationally known experts presented on current research, service system issues and collaboration strategies. Stipends were offered to tribal member consumers and family members from within South Dakota.
