Prevention Specialist

Megan L. Garcia

Megan L. Garcia married Levi Garcia on October 10, 2005 in Rapid City South Dakota.  She has one step-daughter Indrea Garcia age 4, who currently resides in Eagle Butte with her biological mother.

Megan Garcia is an enrolled member of the Sicangu Oyate or Rosebud Sioux Tribe member and also a member of the Milks Camp community of the Rosebud Sioux Tribe in South Dakota.  She is an employee of the Native American Advocacy Program (NAAP) as a Prevention Specialist.

Megan graduated from Bonesteel – Fairfax High School in May 2001 and attended one semester at University of South Dakota in Vermillion. She began working, as she was undecided as to what she wanted to major in and took a break from school.  In late 2004, Megan moved to Rapid City, South Dakota where she was arrested for possession of a controlled cubstance (methamphetamine) and possession of drug paraphernalia which resulted in a suspended imposition and three years supervised release.  Megan went to treatment at Keystone Treatment Center in April of 2005 for 45 days and has since been living a drug, alcohol, and tobacco free lifestyle.  Megan has since decided to work in the Prevention field with youth of the reservations to better the future of the Native American population.

Megan is currently working towards a Masters in counseling from Sinte Gleska University in Mission, South Dakota and hopefully a PhD.  She is also an active participant in her Native American culture; she regularly attends powwows, ceremonies, and also teaches what she knows to her youth groups.  She is a jingle dress dancer and an old style fancy shawl dancer.
