Oyate Contreras is a Ho-Chunk/Oglala Lakota born at home in Porcupine, South Dakota to Ted Means and Lorelei DeCora.  She is married to Michael Contreras who was recently honorably discharged from the United States Marine Corps.  Together they have 4 children; Shauni age 14, Austin age 10, Teton age 5 and the baby Malia age 3.  They make their home on the Sisseton-Wahpeton reservation, where her husband is an enrolled member.  She graduated from the University of South Dakota in May of 2002 with a BA in Criminal Justice Studies.
